Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises at the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice more symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
